Bullet Journal Basics

What is a Bullet Journal?

The Bullet Journal is a note-taking and planning system created by Ryder Carroll. His goal is to help its practitioners (bullet journalists) live intentional lives, ones that are productive and meaningful.

To learn more about this, you can check out this video.

You can also check out the FREE Bullet Journal reference guide from Kim of Tiny Ray of Sunshine.

The Basics – for Beginners

The Bullet Journal is comprised of 4 modules:

  • Index – the “table of contents”
  • Future Log – a space to write down events in the upcoming months
  • Monthly Log – your monthly calendar and tasks
  • Daily Log – where you write your thoughts, tasks, and events for a particular day

The Other Basics

  • Rapid Log – a note-taking technique utilized by the Bullet Journal system
  • Weekly Log – a pre-made yet customized layout that is similar to a planner
  • Threading – a technique to easily reference related pages
  • Key – unique symbols to represent a type of activity, also known as signifier

It uses bullet points as a form of note-taking called “rapid logging“.

Yes, you can even start mid-month.

Any notebook and a pen. But if you want to have the best experience, you should always use products that you actually love. I have a few recommendations which you can find in my Supplies page

No. A lot prefer to express their creativity in their journal but always remember, function over form!

No, there is no right way. The BuJo is a flexible system and should be tailored to suit your needs

No but I highly recommend it. The most important information is all presented in the official website. But in the book, Ryder talks about the system and the practice and how the bullet journal can promote mindfulness
