To get more and more people into film photography, we need to educate them as good as possible.

Founder of Filmtypes
Filmtypes, a database for film stocks, officially went live on April 29, 2019 and launched on Product Hunt on September 3, 2019. Filmtypes is the brainchild of Dominik Sobe, an analog photography enthusiast. He created this website so that he would be able to help educate fellow film photographers, beginner and novice alike, about the different films stocks available in the market.
Filmtypes helps starters as well as people who already shoot film to educate themselves about the variety of films by showing the characteristics, photo examples, written & video reviews as well as providing them a way to engage in discussions.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned film photographer, you will find this website useful. It will have most of the data that you would need to make a sound decision about the film that you are interested in purchasing next.
On Product Hunt, he mentions that “While scrolling through endless blog articles and example photos on tumblr (which took me ages) I decided to aggregate the most useful data, pick the six most fitting example photos by hand (yes by hand 🤫) and create a place for you to easily explore the beautiful variety of analog film 🎞️. “
Exploring Filmtypes
It’s a simple website that’s easy on the eyes and easy to navigate. You will first come across a landing page when you visit to the website.
And then once you click “Explore Now”, you will be directed to the current film database. Each card shows the basic information that you will need from a film stock – film type and the ISO.
The search bar is straightforward and will instantly show you results of your query.
You can also use the filter feature so that you can easily find what you are looking for. Filter categories are as follows: type, brand, speed (ISO), grain, and contrast.
Film Details, Sample Photos
To learn more about a film stock, all you need to do is to click on the card and you will be redirected to the product page. I
Dominik has mentioned that he handpicked every photo that goes on the product page. The six photos are what he believes are the best representation of the film.

There are also reviews linked to external websites from notable film photography writers/bloggers.
Currently, there are 52 film stocks in the database (and this number is expected to grow).
The website is also mobile friendly too and easy to navigate when you’re on-the-go.
This is truly a great alternative to going to forums, photo galleries, or even hashtags just to learn more about a film. Hopefully, this can help beginners ease into the hobby as well and keep film alive in the digital age.
