Unboxing

From the Notebook Review: Galen Leather Leather-Bound Tomoe River Notebook

When you receive your Everyday Book, you will find a cardboard box enclosure (ours was older so we received a canvas case) for your notebook, 2 line guides, and 1 leather pad.

There are 2 line guides – one ruled and one grid. Both are printed front and back – for the grid, a 5mm and a 10mm and for the ruled, a 7mm and 10mm spaced ruling.

The leather pad is a nice multipurpose tool for either blotting ink to take off excess ink or a writing cushion to put underneath a page while you are writing.

Quick Look

The notebook is very simple. It has rounded edges and is comprised of blank Tomoe River paper and the notebook is covered in a black textured cardstock paper. The branding is present but hidden at the back of the notebook, which I believe some would appreciate.

  • Stickers not included

The notebook cover is durable enough. However, there might be instances where the notebook cover won’t fully protect your notebook. I took this notebook on a trip and stored it in my check-in luggage. When I took it out, the cover and the first few pages were a bit dented. The notebook itself might be susceptible to damage but this is when the cardboard box comes in handy.

This is made out of 52gsm paper so it is very thin and is prone to ghosting. It can easily wrinkle, and you can see how easily the paper was affected by the denting in the cover page.

Paper Quality

The Everyday Books use the original 52gsm Tomoe River paper. If you aren’t familiar with Tomoe River paper, it is a type of paper that is ink-resistant and brings out the best properties of fountain pen ink.

Overall thoughts

This notebook is simple and basic but it works. I am not the biggest fan of blank notebooks because I find it tougher to write in long form. However, this notebook is really top notch. Despite disliking blank notebooks, I use the Galen Leather Everyday Book as my daily driver for stream of consciousness writing. This format is great for those who want more freedom when journaling – like creative journaling or art journaling.
