Pebble Stationery Co. is a stationery company based in Australia founded by fellow stationery lovers Lois Ho and Joohn Soh. Their mission is to create tools that will support learning, creativity, and productivity.

The A5 Cahier is their latest product which is a notebook made out of Tomoe River Paper. They launched this on Kickstarter a few months ago and has reportedly been funded within 3 hours. On their Kickstarter page, they have had 164 backers pledge AU$ 8,487 to help bring this project to life.

Yes, it’s another Tomoe River notebook, which is great for most fountain pen enthusiasts. The quality of paper on the Pebble Stationery notebooks will not vary with other brands that use Tomoe River paper. One thing that you should note is that for every notebook (TMR) that you purchase from Pebble Stationery Co, a pencil will be donated to a child in need. Pretty neat, huh?

Disclosure: This product was sent to us for free in return for my honest review. Photos are ours unless otherwise stated. Notebook Specifications

  • 14.8 x 21.0 cm or 5.8 x 8.3 inches
  • Numbered pages
  • 120 pages of 52gsm Tomoe River Paper
  • 5mm Dot Grid
  • Sewn Stitch Bound
  • Covered spine (no exposed stitching on the spine)
  • Grey, Linen finished cover 350gsm
  • Rounded corners
  • Subtle, minimalist embossed branding
  • For each pack of Tomoe River Notebooks sold, a pencil will be donated to a child in need.

The Cover

Pebble Stationery’s Cahier notebook cover has a softcover but doesn’t use the standard card stock that most thin notebooks use. It uses a linen finished card stock that adds elegance to the notebook.

One important thing to note here is the covered spine. It’s a nice little touch because some notebooks, such as the Rhodia sewn-spine notebook, have visible stitching along the spine.

The paper

The A5 cahier has a 5mm dot grid. The dots are faint and will definitely not bother you as you write.

It has numbered pages, which is pretty interesting since not all Tomoe River paper notebooks have numbered pages.

Fountain Pen Use

Tomoe River paper is of course great for fountain pens but it isn’t for everyone. If you want to get the most out of your fountain pen ink, then you might like Tomoe River.

For other pens and markers

This is a 52gsm paper so ghosting/showthrough is expected. Paper quality is excellent. No bleeding or feathering even with highlighters.

This Notebook is Best for…

  • People who love numbered pages and Tomoe River paper
  • Fountain pen lovers who want something lightweight
  • People who love to support a good cause (Pebble Stationery Co. donates one pencil to a child in need for every pack of Tomoe River notebook sold)

Final Thoughts and Score Rationale

  • Paper Quality – 10. No bleed-through, no feathering, can handle fountain pen ink and watercolor. Ghosting is not considered to be an issue because it’s normal for a 52gsm paper.
  • Value for money – 9. It’s priced at around $13 so a bit above average but cost is justifiable given its specifications. And hey, you give back to the community.
  • Durability – 8.5. One downside with a thin Tomoe River paper is that it can easily get wrinkled. If not protected, you can’t easily just toss this in a bag. With this notebook, the cover is nice and quite thick so it would still have protection while it’s inside a bag.
  • Design – 10. The notebook has a number of desirable features that you wouldn’t normally find in a thin notebook. The finish on the cover is beautiful, it gives you space write down your information, and it has numbered pages.

I am very excited to use this notebook. Coincidentally, I have just used up all the pages in my 500-page Tomoe River notebook (for daily journaling) and have been meaning to try other brands. I feel that this notebook will be a great replacement for my Morning Pages notebook because it’s lighter and more portable.
