Disclosure: The Lomo’Instant Automat was loaned to me by Lomography Asia Pacific in return for my honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own and are not in any way influenced by the aforementioned organization.

Score Rationale

DESIGN 9/10

  • Camera’s design matches Lomography’s brand well (vintage-inspired)
  • Design is very intentional. I really like the fact that the remote control is also a lens cap.
  • It has a tripod mount!
  • There are a lot of colors to choose from and you can even customize it if you want.
  • Downside is that this camera is too bulky

FEATURES 10.0/10

  • The Lomo’Instant Automat is packed with features such as: multiple exposure, bulb setting, remote control lens cap, lens attachments.

EASE OF USE 8.5/10

  • The camera is pretty straightforward but because of the advanced features, it might be more difficult for entry-level users.
  • Splitzer lens attachment was a bit difficult to use. The concept is interesting but I wasn’t able to capture a decent photo with it, unfortunately.
  • Batteries that are required for this camera are substandard. The camera uses 2 CR2 batteries and a CR1632 (3V) for the remote control.

IMAGE QUALITY 8.0/10

  • I tried this camera in different shooting modes and I wasn’t able to capture crisp images with most of it. It could be the “lomography effect” but the hazy effect doesn’t translate well in an Instax Mini.

VALUE FOR MONEY 6.0/10

  • With its price, I was expecting a more modern approach to the power source but unfortunately, it still requires Cr2 alkaline batteries.

Lomo Instant Automat

The Lomo Instant Automat is comparable to the Fujifilm’s Instax Mini 90 (Neo Classic). It is an advanced version of the Instax Mini 8/9 and has takes a page out of Lomography’s book in terms of multiple exposures and other shooting modes.

Overall Thoughts

Unfortunateky, I don’t think it’s necessarily a “Fujifilm Instax killer”. I think the Lomo’Instant Automat (LIA) is a great camera nonetheless. Its features are at par with Lomography’s style and manifesto and stand out in the Instant camera market. Given its price point, the LIA might not bode well for entry-level users (those who intend to merely point-and-shoot). The LIA’s advanced features seem to target experienced photographers or Instant camera users who have basic photography knowledge. If you’re looking into taking your Instant photography to the next level, this camera might be good for you.
